Links below present estimated ShakeMaps for the 26 January, 2001, Bhuj earthquake. Intensities are estimated for over 300 sites at which news or other accounts were available in the aftermath of the earthquake. These accounts will be made available as an on-line database shortly. A protype of the database, compiled by Stacey Martin, is on-line now; it contains original accounts used to determine approximately 200 of the MMI values shown in the figures below.
To generate "ShakeMap" representations, we used a simple mathematical contouring scheme to interpolate between constrained points. Our approach and results are described at length in a paper recently submitted to BSSA. Preprints available up request.
1. The ground motion parameter scales (peak velocity and acceleration) were determined from California data and are not necessarily appropriate for Indian earthquakes.
2. The ground motion maps are only constrained at the individual points indicated with small circles;
